If you have a wide experience operating a crane for your construction projects or third party assistance, you probably know all of the crane parts and their uses. However, some of us are starters and will use some helpful information to learn how to buy and operate cranes. To help you with this predicament, we made this guide on crane parts and their functions.

The Operator’s Cabin

The operator’s cabin is a very visible part of a crane. This is where you can often spot the crane operator controlling the boom and crane using different control sticks and buttons. The operator’s cabin is an off-limit area and must only be accessed by the crane operator or his trusted coworkers. This crane part also needs to have a good view of the site and the crane from any angle. Usually, the operator’s cabin also contains the driving component of the crane.

The Boom

If you look closely at the arm of a crane, you’ll notice that it has a cylindrical or telescope-like apparatus which loads and unloads some materials such as cement. This cylinder is called “boom”. It is often used to pump cement to ensure that the cement will land on the precise spot and in the right amount.

Hydraulic Pumps

Hydraulic pumps can be seen in many spots of the whole crane system. A crane uses hydraulic pumps to push loads to high spots.

Counterweights

A crane can only lift loads to its maximum capacity. When it needs to carry very heavy loads, the arm has a tendency to swing and waver, or worse snap. Big accidents can happen when the crane malfunctions while carrying heavy loads. Thus, counterweights are very important crane parts. They secure the balance of the loads while it operates.

Hoist and Hooks

Last but not least in this list of crane parts are hoist and hooks. These are probably the smallest yet the most important part of the crane. They make lifting possible and secure.

Some other parts of the crane are not included with most cranes that can be bought in the market. They are auxiliary parts but will provide easier access to the crane.
